CBL GIRLS BASKETBALL NOTES - NOVEMBER 26, 2007

With every team in the league returning at least five players from last year and only five of the 12 first- or second-team all-league selections graduating, the CBL 3A figures to be a deeper, better league than a year ago.

"Everybody's pretty well-balanced," said Eastmont coach Brent Darnell. "There's not that one standout stud like Lyndsey Martin. Every team has two or three decent kids."

Darnell was referring to last year's league MVP, who led Kamiakin to the league title and to within a win of its first state berth in eight years.

Despite graduating Martin, Kamiakin is rated as the favorite to win the league title again by returning four starters as well as getting sophomore G Jori Skorpik back from a knee injury that sidelined her last winter.

She'll join league defensive co-MVP Tina Miller in the backcourt, while honorable-mention all-league picks Stacey Smith and Marcy Hjellum return in the frontcourt.

"I think if we'd have had Jori last year, we would definitely have gone to state," said coach Tammy Hutchison. "She sees the floor very well, is an excellent ballhandler, an excellent passer. She makes a difference."

Hanford had a disappointing end to last year, losing three straight in the playoffs after finishing second in league play.

However, the Falcons looked good during summer ball and have the biggest team in the league, featuring three 6-footers -- including 6-2 senior Brittany Quick, a first-team all-leaguer last year who also is the All-Area MVP in volleyball after leading Hanford to the state title.

"The rest of the post crew is very good, too," said coach Evan Woodward. "We still want to run and keep the tempo up as much as we can, but that's going to depend on our defense. If we can be successful with our height defensively, we're going to run."

Kennewick was the surprise district champion, knocking off Hanford in the semifinals and West Valley in the finals. Though the Lions lost twice at regionals, they hope to carry the district success into this season.

They graduated only one starter (Brittany Perez) and got a pleasant surprise when sophomore PG Reina Malito returned -- she had transferred to Mead in the spring but came back to Kennewick this fall. Malito adds to a loaded backcourt along with junior Julia Draney, who shared Defensive MVP honors with Miller, and the Lions could get another boost if junior Courtney Perez's eligibility appeal is granted by the WIAA.

"We'll be guard-oriented," said coach Joe Harshman. "We just hope to get it together and hit our rhythm in conference play. The kids learned last year it's how you finish that matters."

West Valley's hopes took a hit during the summer when junior G Liz Tikriti, a first-team all-leaguer a year ago, suffered a season-ending knee injury. The Rams still have the pieces for a successful season, though, with a pair of 6-footers in juniors Erin Richardson and Katelin Sillery, and sophomore G Haley Curtis, who played a big role last year when Brittany Murillo went down with an injury.

Eastmont could be the surprise team of the year, led by a trio of juniors. The starting backcourt of Karinne Tuttle at the point (back from a torn ACL suffered midway through last season) and Brooke Randall at off-guard ranks among the league's best, and Madison Miller has the potential to be one of the league's best posts once she returns from a knee injury.

Southridge made the playoffs for the first time in seven years with a young crew that graduated only one senior.

The Suns are young again -- four sophomores are on the seven-player roster and only one senior -- but with four starters back, including promising guards Jamie Lyons and Heather Worley, they'll be dangerous.

"Our expectations are set higher," said coach Kristen Davis. "Jamie and Heather got through the freshman bumps and bruises. I think Jamie this year will step into a scoring role this year, and Heather is just a hustle player who does all the dirty work for us."

Sunnyside has a new coach in Eric Berg, the freshman coach the last three years who takes over a team that was winless last season.

The Grizzlies should be much improved with the Rollinger sisters (Kayla and Kelsey) in the paint and Alexis Ramos, a defensive standout who sat out last year after playing as a sophomore, joining a backcourt with Shana Zamarron at the point and Katie Wutzke at off-guard.

Predicted Order of Finish

1. Kamiakin

2. Hanford

3. Kennewick

4. West Valley

5. Eastmont

6. Southridge

7. Sunnyside
