TRACK NOTES - MARCH 19, 2008

Season Preview: Columbia Basin League at a Glance

CBL 4A Boys: Walla Walla, Richland and Eisenhower again figure to have the strongest dual-meet teams thanks to their strong numbers.

Wa-Hi has Justin Piek, the regional champion in the long jump, and senior Michael Najera, who was a finalist in both hurdles races. Richland has a large contingent of freshmen surrounding a senior corps led by state high jump champ Cody McCargar and regional qualifiers Ted Blowe (300H), Colton Casillas (400) and Ryan Willits (1600). Pasco junior Peter Gilbert had a strong debut, winning the 400 and taking second in the 1,600 at the Richland Jamboree. Moses Lake's Tad Harman is one of the favorites in both the shot and discus.

Girls: Richland has won three straight district titles and has not lost a league dual since 2004. The Bombers are strongest in the hurdles, jumps and middle distances but won't give up points anywhere. Jessica Christian already has pole vaulted 11-6 and Jessica Clements high-jumped 5-4 at Saturday's jamboree. Pasco has a good sprint corps led by junior Yesenia Ortiz and senior Bianca Arellano, and distance youngsters Marisa Vander Malle and Janette Rodriguez look to build off their state experience in cross country. Walla Walla and Moses Lake are rebuilding.

2007 champions (duals and districts): Walla Walla (boys); Richland (girls).

Returning state qualifiers: Boys: Dimitri Mandapat, soph., Davis (200); Cody VanDeBrake, sr., Eisenhower (800); Justin Piek, jr., Walla Walla (long jump); Tad Harman, sr., Moses Lake (shot, discus); Cody McCargar, sr., Richland (high jump); Jonathan Miller, sr., Richland (triple jump). Girls: Sandra Martinez, jr., Davis (3200); Galia Deitz, sr., Richland (100H, 300H); Jessica Clements, sr., Richland (high jump); Shanie Bushman, sr., Walla Walla (long jump, pole vault); Jessica Christian, jr., Richland (pole vault); Courtney Bratrude, sr., Wenatchee (pole vault); Lindsay Roberts, sr., Richland (triple jump); Shaniae Lakes, jr., Richland (triple jump).

CBL 3A

Boys: Kamiakin again has a strong all-around team bolstered by the return of senior Ross Manderscheid from hamstring and hip injuries that derailed his 2007 season. He'll help in the sprints and long jump. Jon Murbach is almost at 50 feet in the shot already, and Jason Feser cleared 6-6 in the high jump at the jamboree. Hanford got a boost with junior Josh Bland coming out for the first time - he ran an 11.72 100 and high-jumped 6-0 in his jamboree debut. Southridge gets back hurdler Matt Wimett from injury; he, Steve Swanson (6-5 high jumper) and Josh Antonsen (shot put) should benefit from the region getting a third state berth.

Girls: Southridge, Kamiakin, Hanford and West Valley all could contend for dual-meet and district honors. The Suns are loaded in the sprints and jumps, with three-fourths of their 4x100 relay back in Chelsea Bourque, Kasey McNeill and LaQuilla Upton. Freshman Emily Butler, a state qualifier in cross country, headlines an improved distance corps. Kamiakin's Allyssa Thompson and EWU signee Olivia Johnston lead a team that also has few weak spots event-wise. Hanford's Taymussa Miller cleared 5-4 in the high jump at the jamboree and Megan Dart ran 2:26.73 in the 800. Thompson and Miller were near-misses for state berths a year ago.

2007 champions: Duals: Kamiakin (boys); Southridge (girls). Districts: Kamiakin (boys and girls). Returning state qualifiers: Boys: Kody Winsor, jr., Hanford (100); Tim Kruse, sr., West Valley (800); Andrew Gonzales, jr., Southridge (3200); Carter Nell, sr., Eastmont (pole vault); Cameron Fancher, sr., Southridge (pole vault); Jason Feser, sr., Kamiakin (triple jump).
