BOYS SOCCER NOTES - MARCH 17, 2010

A look at the CBBN 4A/3A leagues for high school boys soccer:

2009 league champion: Pasco. 4A district champion: Pasco. 3A regional champion: West Valley.

Returning all-league players: First team: GK--Emmanuel Martinez, sr., Pasco; Def--Forrest Chapin, jr., West Valley; MF--Walter Manriquez, sr., Davis; Albert Anabtawi, sr., Eisenhower; Christian Gonzales, sr., West Valley; For--Jarad Brisbin, sr., Southridge; Nick Wood, sr., Richland.

Second team: GK--Brandon Hale, sr., Southridge; Def--Jordan Esqueda, sr., Sunnyside; Josh Mendoza, jr., Southridge; Lucas Cash, sr., Pasco; Louis Poeppel, sr., Pasco; Perry McNamar, jr., Richland; MF--Devin Petersen, sr., Moses Lake; Jesse Macias, sr., Pasco; Merced Rodriguez, sr., Kennewick; For--Marco Martinez, sr., Wenatchee; Jonathan Herrera, sr., Eisenhower; Jake Zoulek, soph., Southridge; Paul Martinez, soph., Kennewick.

The one consensus among CBBN coaches in 2010 is this: There is no clear preseason choice to win the league title.

Perennial league favorites Kamiakin and Pasco still have plenty of talent, but the Braves and defending CBBN champ Bulldogs will have to contend with Kennewick and Southridge to see who makes a big postseason run.

Pasco, the 4A state runner-up a year ago, has a new coach in Matt Potter, but he has four all-league returners to work with. Southridge might be the new top program in town, though, backed by first-teamer Jarad Brisbin and three other all-leaguers.

Kennewick nearly upset Pasco in last year's 4A regionals and returns all but three players off that roster. The Lions started strong this year, beating a solid Sunnyside team in overtime on the road.

Most coaches are curious about Chiawana, which beat Kamiakin in a shootout in the program's first-ever game. Under coach Rich Zoller, the Riverhawks promise to be a strong attacking team and could make the playoff race exciting.

Don't count out Richland and Nick Wood, the CBBN's top returning scorer. The Bombers will fight for a home playoff berth in May, but they'll have a tough time bouncing West Valley out of the top four.

Kamiakin is extremely young this season under coach Jeff Bennett. The Braves graduated four all-league players, and their longtime coach, Todd Borak, resigned.

Moses Lake and Walla Walla were left out of the playoff mix last season. They may be out of luck again in one of the state's top soccer conferences.

Hanford returns a more experienced team and should improve on last year's 2-11 league record.
