Here is a Mid-Columbia Conference look at the 2012 season for girls high school soccer:

Mid-Columbia Conference

Kamiakin returns the top forward in the area in Ellie Heiden, along with all-state GK Sydnee Grant. With big wins over Gonzaga Prep, Pasco and Chiawana, the Braves will be the favorites. Richland, last year's CBBN 4A champ, will be a top contender with seven starters returning, including all four defenders, top scorer Kirsten Calmus and top playmaker Katherine Virden.

Chiawana could challenge with CBBN 4A scoring leader F Lexi Miller and a strong cast of eight returning starters. Courtney Winston and Molly Sullivan, sisters of former Pasco stars Kaylie Winston and Morgan Sullivan, could make a strong impact. Hanford is counting on MF Deanna Quadrel's quick return from ACL surgery in March. The Falcons will need strong leadership from senior D Savanna Steele, and juniors MF Sydney Shintaffer and F Bret Baysinger.

Pasco is poised to make a big jump in the standings with nine returning starters and six reserves with varsity experience. Behind Sydney Virgen and Abby Buckenberger, the Bulldogs will no longer have to fight to stay out of the cellar. Defending CBBN 3A champion Southridge may be down, but don't count the Suns out yet. They have two of the league's best MF in Hannah Sanders and Michelle Foster, plus returning all-league D Emma Sanders. Walla Walla returns F Paige Pontarolo, one of the league's top scorers a year ago. Kennewick didn't win a game in 2011, but F Kennedy Woodrich and MF Stephanie Wilson will be at the center of the big push for a 'W'.
