Richland finished fifth in the 4A team standings Saturday at the state boys swimming championships at the King County Aquatic Center. The Bombers had seven finalists, with Nathaniel Weinman finishing seventh in the 500-yard freestyle (4:45.10, just ahead of teammate Nick Connors) and eighth in the 200 free. Weinman also swam legs on the seventh-place 200 free relay (1:31.13) and on the sixth-place 400 free relay (3:18.33). Junior Tyler Pickett was the Bombers' top finisher, placing fifth in the 200 individual medley (1:58.05) after posting the top qualifying time in Friday's prelims. Freshman Andrew Blanchard took eighth in the 100 butterfly in 54.86. "We were scrappy in the water today and fought hard," Richland/Hanford coach Kathy Piper said. Falcons sophomore B.J. Deatherage placed seventh in 3A diving (268) and teammate Daniel Tixier placed sixth in the 100 fly (53.58). Prosser had three finalists in the 2A meet -- James Wildman in the 50 free (eighth, 23.34), Branden Hobbick in the 100 fly (seventh, 56.97) and Nolan Saam in the 100 breaststroke (eighth, 1:06.48). FRIDAY NIGHT B.J. Deatherage of Hanford is in eighth place after the first day of diving at the 3A state meet and advanced to Saturday's finals at King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. Deatherage completed eight dives in the round for a combined score of 195.05 -- 102 points behind leader Troy Neklason of Highline. BOYS SWIMMING PREVIEW There are several questions in regards to the boys state swimming and diving championships scheduled to begin today at King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. First, will the state record in the 100-yard butterfly (47.81 seconds) set by 2009 4A Swimmer of the Year and Richland grad Cody Roberts remain standing, or will it fall? "I don't think his record is in jeopardy," said Kathy Piper, coach of both the Richland and Hanford teams. But certainly gunning for some hardware will be Bombers freshman Andrew Blanchard, seeded ninth in the event with a time of 54.89. Also up for debate: Will Richland senior Eric Blanchard cap an already stellar season -- and steady prep career -- with title performances in the 100 back and 200 free, events in which he's seeded 11th (56.60 seconds) and 13th (1:49.78) respectively. And will the Bombers improve upon last season's state finishes in the 200 medley (third, 1:39.05) and 400 free (fourth, 3:15.48) relays? The list goes on. But it's safe to say that Richland has experience on its side, with senior Alden Welsch, juniors Nathaniel Weinman and Tyler Pickett and sophomore Nick Connors all arriving at the pool as state veterans. Also returning to state will be Moses Lake diver Braxton Ford, who finished 14th last year with a score of 288.30. Joining Ford on the board will be junior teammate Daniel Camacho. Highlighting the diving event on the 3A side will be Hanford sophomore B.J. Deatherage, who finished 18th overall at state last year with a score of 167.60. The Falcons have seven entries to state. As it did last season, Hanford qualified a pair of relay teams -- 200 medley (sixth, 1:42.36) and 400 free (10th, 3:23.85) -- and senior Daniel Tixier will slice the lanes in the 100 fly and 200 free. Piper said that the teams are ready, come what may. "I think all the kids are ready to go," she said. "They're tapered and have lots of energy. "They're full of it and ready to go."
