TRACK NOTES (DISTRICT MEET) - MAY 14, 2011
Hanford's Joseph Collett figured he wouldn't have too many problems getting through to the regional meet in the 110-meter hurdles.
So, he put all of his focus on the 300 hurdles.
It nearly paid off with a school record.
Collett swept the hurdle titles Friday at the CBBN 3A district track and field meet at Edgar Brown Stadium in Pasco, winning the 110s in 14.63 seconds and the 300s in 39.3 -- just a half second off the school record.
"I don't think of it as getting places," Collett said. "I was just trying to PR and go as fast as I can to try and get a scholarship."
Collett will have to continue to get faster to get the college offer he is hoping for.
"I've been talking to BYU, and they said if I got to 14-flat, I could get an offer," the junior said.
Collett's fastest time in the 110 hurdles is 14.54. He has consistently gotten faster in the event and he gives a lot of credit to his coaches.
"We've been practicing it a lot more," Collett said. "Listening to our coach is a big thing. Last year, I was a bit rebellious, but he knows how hard to push me."
Last season, Collett was blocked by Joe Clements, who finished seventh at state in the 110s for Hanford.
"When Joe was here, I didn't have as much drive because he was so much better than me," Collett said. "Now there is nothing stopping me. I can just go as hard as I can."
Now, he hopes to keep the momentum going through the regional meet so he can qualify for state in both events.
"I'm really hoping so," he said. "My time definitely qualifies me. I'm definitely pumped up to be going (to regionals)."
Collett isn't the only one.
Kamiakin won the team title Friday, led by Jerrod Johnston who won the 100 (10.83), the 200 (22.03) and anchored the 4x100 and 4x400 relays to victory. Teammate Anthony Armstrong destroyed the distance field, bringing home double gold in the 1,600 (4:20.98) and 3,200 (9:22.86)
Pasco's Presley Powell won the 400 (51.61) and Brandon Search won the high jump (6-5).
Southridge's Aaron Smith rallied to the 800 title in 2:01.22, just edging Hanford's Noel Hathaway by .36 seconds.
Hanford's Cameron Wagar won the shot put (48-9.5) and the javelin (175-9) and Sunnyside's Eduardo Salmeron won the triple jump (41-7.25).
Top eight individuals and top four relays advance to regional meet.
